Helping Hands for Heroes Nutrition and Education Center

Thanks to our partners, USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia will be launching a healthy food initiative to promote wellness, food, education, and healthy living. Our Helping Hands for Heroes: Nutrition and Education Center is a new program addressing the very real issue of the scarcity of food that our troops encounter. Designed in response to concrete research revealing that military service members, particularly junior enlisted families, struggle with food insecurity; a situation greatly exacerbated by spouse job losses during Covid-19.

The thought of any military child, let alone any child, feeling hunger or anxiety about having enough to eat is intolerable to the USO team. With the enthusiastic blessing from Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek – Fort Story’s (JEBLCFS) Commanding Officer, we will be re-purposing the JEBLCFS USO center from a weekday lunch counter to a full-scale food resource center; providing emergency food supplies, a monthly distribution of food to those who need it most, a mobile food pantry, and a healthy cooking program organized by ECPI University’s Culinary Institute of Virginia.

In addition, we have engaged in a partnership with Armed Services YMCA to reach as many struggling families as possible, however, support is provided on a resource available basis. Soon, military families will learn to use fresh, whole ingredients on a budget to feed their families better, with less.
