USO Canine Program

Canine Comfort Crew, the therapy dogs of USOHRCV
A wagging tail, an enthusiastic bark, a napping buddy, a furry whirlwind of affection. These are just a few examples of what our beloved therapy dogs bring to service members in our local USO centers. It would be an understatement to say that these incredible pups are beneficial to troops and families. When service members have a long day navigating the stresses of military service, they know they can come to our centers and find that missing piece of their home lives. Perhaps they are far away from their own dogs, or maybe they have fond memories of a pet growing up, or they simply find comfort in the blissful face of man’s and woman’s best friend. Either way, these remarkable dogs are just the ticket to release the pressures of military life.
Therapy dogs are known to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and even release oxytocin. Our nation’s service members are responsible for the safety and security of our country and with that comes an enormous amount of strain. They are often far from their homes or deployed for long periods of time - remote from family and friends. Bringing a slice of home to the men and women wearing the cloth of our nation is what the USO does best; and our four-legged team helps further our vital mission. Come what may, the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia will always be there with a helping hand, a listening ear, and a carefree canine to make a service member’s day just a little bit easier.
If you and your furry friend are interested in becoming part of our USOHRCV Canine Comfort Crew, please email usohrcvcontactus@uso.org and we will send you an application. We are currently accepting qualified teams who have been certified by Therapy Dogs International, Love on a Leash and Pet Partners.
After your Canine Comfort Crew application is received by USOHRCV staff, you will be contacted for further information and an in-person interview. Two-legged volunteers will also need to register as an official USOHRCV volunteer.
