Walgreens is joining your local USO to support service members and their families! From Oct. 7 to Oct. 21, customers at any Walgreens location can donate $1, $3, or $5 at the register to help keep our men and women in uniform connected to everything they love and fight for: family, home & country. Customers also have the option to donate more to support our mission.
This campaign is one of many military support efforts by Walgreens. In 1943 during World War II, Walgreens established a not-for-profit pharmacy in the Pentagon, a service for which it was formally recognized by President Eisenhower. It was a 6,000-foot drugstore in the Pentagon and all the profits from the store went to the Pentagon Post Restaurant Council, which supervised food service in the complex. The store operated into the 1980s. Walgreens was also was an important marketer of War Bonds during the war effort.
In addition, Walgreens has partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States to work to reduce the number of military veteran suicides through community outreach to service organizations. In 2018, Walgreens helped reach approximately 10,000 veterans and their spouses at national and state conventions with information about reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues.
“It’s pretty amazing to see how after many years, Walgreens has consistently shown their support of our men and women in uniform. Through this campaign, every day shoppers can be a part of our USO family,” said Erica Venezuela, Marketing and Development Coordinator of USOHRCV.
