Healthy Military Families Initiative: Supplemental Food Program for Local Military

Ever since our founding in 1941, the USO has provided our military and their families with a large variety of food support. Whether it’s providing snack care packages on the front lines or a meal at one of our 250+ locations, our food programs supplement the robust food offerings provided by the U.S. military.

USO Hampton Roads and Central Virginia (USO HRCV) continues to strengthen our military by offering enhanced programming that helps our troops and their families make smart choices to provide them and their families with accessible and healthy food options. On May 2021, we launched our latest program, Healthy Military Families Initiative Nutrition and Education Center., or HMFI.

The program includes food distributions on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at our HMFI center on USO Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek/Fort Story. Service members and their families can drop by to pick up a food resource bag and educational material.

In the near future, USO HRCV plans to launch corresponding program videos on the USO HRCV YouTube channel with the help of chefs from the Culinary Institute of Virginia, which will include healthy recipes on a limited budget, cooking demonstrations, and educational segments like grocery shopping on a budget.
